Mesothelioma is an incurable cancer that effects the lining of the lungs.
Mesothelioma is a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. One of this diseases characteristics is that it is currently incurable. Treatment is limited to chemotherapy, surgery, immunotherapy, and radiation all of which have not proved successful. Recently a new drug, Vinflunine ,has emerged as an exciting new treatment option for Pleural Mesothelioma patients. Testing of this drug were done on sixty-seven Pleural Mesothelioma patients who had not received radiation or chemotherapy as forms of treatment for their disease. Vinflunine was administered via intravenous infusion 320 mg/m2 for a one of twenty day cycle. In conclusion, Vinflunine achieved a 13.8% response rate, which may seem small, but is significant, since current Mesothelioma treatments much to be desired. With further research and the emergence of new drugs like Vinflunine, Mesothelioma should have better treatment options in the near future. |
